Globalization and digitization offer numerous opportunities to all and also to the trade fair industry.

Globalization enables us to become involved in new markets. And thanks to new technologies, we at Messe München develop digital solutions for our clients. With our Virtual Services, it is possible to present products in a new and impressive way, e.g. with the help of virtual and augmented reality—which will be seen at bauma 2019. If we do our homework and continue to develop our business to align it to the needs of our clients, then we have a successful future for our exhibition business.

shares with Maria R, Messe München's plans and preparations for the upcoming bauma Germany 2019 tradeshow for the CE sector, and how this edition, scheduled to be held during 8-14 April 2019 in Munich, is set to be bigger and better.

How are preparations progressing to make this edition of bauma Germany a multi-dimensional business platform?

We are absolutely optimistic; we expect this edition to once again set new benchmarks for the CE industry. From a global perspective, the industry continues to grow, with a few exceptions in individual regions. We notice the strong demand through the large number of participants and visitors at the global market platform bauma to be held in Munich. Many exhibitors want to present their products and services to reach international markets.

We are well on our way to increasing the number of exhibitors compared to 2016. The increase in the size of exhibition space from 605,000 to 614,000 sqm, with two new halls and outdoor areas, encourages us to believe that this is going to happen. We also expect a growth in the number of visitors. Preparations are in full swing in all areas, from project management to visitor promotion, and construction work has already begun in our outdoor area.

Please give an update on the exhibitor profile, international participants, country pavilions, exhibition halls, facilities, and special highlights of the event.

With two new halls and optimized layout planning of the outdoor areas, we have also optimized the structure of the segmentation so that visitors can find their way around the fair easily. Construction machinery will be extended to five halls. Additional areas in the northern outdoor area and to the north of Halls C4 and C5 are available for this. Lifting equipment is a new area in Hall C4. The exhibition area for components has also been increased to five halls. Formwork and scaffolding will now be in Hall B3 and also in the larger northern outdoor area. The increase is due to the high demand from exhibitors and changes that are taking place in the industry. Digital topics from the industry will be shown separately in Hall A2.

Bauma 2019

We expect approximately 3,500 exhibitors from 60 countries—almost 100 more than in 2016. We also want to exceed the 600,000-visitor mark and extend our status as the world's biggest trade fair. More and more visitors are coming from abroad. In 2016, 37 percent of exhibitors were from Germany and 63 percent from the rest of the world. The top five international exhibitors by country were: Italy, China, Turkey, UK and USA. 59 percent of the visitors came from Germany and 41 percent came from other countries around the world.

bauma is the most important international trade fair for our industry. This is where trends are shown and impulses are set. As always, there are those exhibitors presenting the superlatives and most creative presentations. Liebherr once again is the largest outdoor exhibitor, closely followed by Wirtgen and John Deere. Caterpillar is the largest indoor exhibitor.

Another highlight is our partner country for bauma 2019; we decided to select Canada, which is one of the world's most important markets for international construction machinery, building material plants and mining machine industries. It is the world's seventh biggest construction machinery market. With a volume of 102 billion and 116 billion euros, respectively, the construction and mining industries account for more than 15 percent of the Canadian gross domestic product. These impressive figures are reason enough to bring Canada as a partner country—as agreed by Messe München and the Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau (VDMA—German Engineering Federation). A Canadian delegation will visit the trade show, and we will set up a Canada Pavilion and a Canada Lounge. bauma 2019 will offer good insights into the Canadian market.


How do you plan to accommodate the long list of companies keen to participate at this platform?

We treat all stakeholders fairly. The booths are limited in size, but the digital area is limitless. With our new virtual offerings like the VR experience, we're bringing the construction site to the trade fair. Other new features are the bauma PLUS models that bring more exhibitors to the fair. With bauma PLUS ONSITE, exhibitors can present their company in a compact area. bauma PLUS MOVE is a flexible co-working area where visitors can meet exhibitors.

For the first time, companies can even present themselves fully digitally. The VR experience is not only a special experience, but also offers significant added value for the daily business. Completely new possibilities will be opened up for planning, development, and also education, advanced training or sales. If you want to train your apprentices under realistic conditions—for instance, in the maintenance of machines—or want to explain the inner workings of a crane to a customer, you don't even have to leave the plant anymore.

Our TrustedTargeting is another digital offer that we make to our exhibitors. Companies already have the opportunity to address their target audience online before the trade fair in order to reach potential new customers and invite them to their exhibition stand. In our communication, we also attach great importance to digital channels, be it through our bauma app or via social media. My advice to visitors: they should climb the Selfie Tower in the northern outdoor area and enjoy the view from above.

How has participation from India increased in bauma Germany?

bauma focuses on strong growth markets abroad, including India. The Indian construction machinery market is booming—thanks to transport and infrastructure initiatives. The 5th edition of bauma CONEXPO INDIA 2018 grew in all areas: 700 companies from 26 countries presented their machines, products and innovative technologies for the construction industry. 39,173 leading industry professionals gathered at HUDA Ground in Gurgaon/Delhi. This success also has a positive effect on bauma in Munich.

In 2016, we had 24 exhibitors and more than 3,100 visitors from India. For bauma 2019, we hope to see an increase in exhibitors and visitors.

What main topics will be discussed at the forums and conferences this year?

We will be focusing on predominant topics such as autonomous driving, electric mobility, networked construction sites, and BIM. Among others, all these topics will be discussed within the scope of a forum. Special regions will be highlighted, such as our current partner country Canada, with which we will be increasing our profile in the area of mining, for example. The special exhibition THINK Big, presented in the ICM, presents qualified jobs in the industry in the form of shows, specially designed for groups of school students. Once again, in 2019, the winners of the bauma Innovation Award will be presented in the forum of Hall C2.

The expert forums offer information and valuable insights into innovative products and selected markets and includes presentations from winners of the bauma Innovation Award, and from universities on new ideas stemming from collaborative projects with industry partners. Of course, the major trends in the industry, such as digitization, BIM, electric mobility and automation will also play an important role. Mining will be a special focus. Moreover, some interesting markets will be highlighted in sessions presenting successful projects and the potential for new business in the region.

Technology and Innovation are key to advanced mechanization. Seeing their importance, what programs are being organized to create awareness?

The bauma Innovation Award presented by VDMA honors technological innovations selected by a top-class jury of experts and trade press journalists. Once again, this year, a list of finalists with highly interesting products was found. The award ceremony will take place on the Sunday evening before bauma. The winners will also present their innovations at the bauma Forum to a wide audience. The Forum will continue to examine important topics for the industry such as autonomous driving, additive manufacturing, and BIM.

Would you like to share any other important information/feature of the show?

An essential part of bauma 2019 is focused on mining. Figures from the previous bauma corroborate the importance: 20 percent of the exhibitors came from the mining sector; this corresponds to 684 exhibitors that provided an overview of the extensive range of products. The figures show that bauma is one of the leading events for the mining sector and attracts international trade visitors who are willing to make the long journey to be present. 24 percent of the visitors came from the mining industry, i.e. around 140,000. Once again, bauma 2019 will bring together all key players of the mining industry.
