Tata Motors will keep launching new products & services and expanding its global presence on the back of its new-generation range

"Tata Motors will keep launching new products & services and expanding its global presence on the back of its new-generation range," says Mr. Rajesh Kaul, Head, Sales and Marketing, Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles (MHCV), Tata Motors.

At Excon our focus was on Mining and Road Construction industry

Tata Motors new products & services
There is positive movement in the macro-economic indicators in the Mining and Road Construction segments. We showcased our product superiority with globally renowned Cummins SCR technology, our rubber and metal heavy-duty Ultimaax suspension system, factory-fitted comfortable AC Signa cabins and lightweight but stronger tipper bodies. All these vehicles are powered by our powerful 180 to 300HP SCR technology engines. We are working on engines, axles, and suspension systems, to provide trouble-free operations and reduce maintenance costs.

Driver comfort is becoming more relevant due to the increased utilization of assets, longer lead distances, as well as the scarcity of drivers. We provide options of AC cabins as well as sleeper cabins in many of our tippers to cater to this need.

We are working with our technology partners to increase fuel efficiency

With a range of offerings in the medium and heavy commercial vehicle segments, which offer the best KMPL, best vehicle uptime, high resale value, warranty, low maintenance cost, we are placed well with the competition.

We are working internally as well as with Cummins and other driveline partners to provide best-in-class fuel economy. In the higher HP range, we have upgraded our 230HP Prima engines to 250HP, and the 280HP engines to 300HP. We have also adopted the SCR emission control technology for vehicles with engines of 150HP and above, in line with the world trends, which gives better environmental compliance and a longer engine life.

Our tipper trucks are designed for better ride and handling characteristics, especially in undulated terrains of mines/off-road/bad-roads, with best vehicle suspension and cabin suspension. They have a faster turnaround time for better operating economics; options of day and sleeper cab for shorter and long leads; best-in-class TCO (fuel efficiency, payload etc) depending on applications; service warranty of 6000hrs / 6yrs (whichever is earlier) for 25-ton GVW and above, and options of various power nodes from 85hp to 300hp.

Tata Motors technology help customers improve productivity

    Tata Prima 3125 Hero
With roads becoming wider and better and the state border toll nakas getting out due to the GST regime, transporters are looking to increase the number of trips. High HP vehicles will help them in doing so. The vehicles that were showcased at Excon were SIGNA 3718.TK 24 cum tipper, PRIMA 3130.K 19 Scoop tipper, PRIMA 2525.K 16 Box tipper with ULTIMAAX suspension, SIGNA 2518.K 7 cum RMC with Bogie Suspension, PRIMA 3125.K 23 cum Box tipper, and SIGNA 4923.S double compartment side-ways tipping trailer. These come with Ultimaax suspension (metal and rubber suspension, no leaf spring, and no lubrication), and telematics as standard fitment, with a 3-year complimentary service in the PRIMA tippers.

We will continue to launch new products and services and expand our presence in the international market on the back of our new-generation range like the Prima and Ultra.

Our R&D has made possible multiple applications of our Tippers

Our tippers are suitable for medium and light mining (Irrigation, Earth Work, Minerals Movement, Blue Metal & Sand Supply, Road Construction, Coal Movement).

    Tata Signa 3718 Hero
Our highway tippers are designed for Blue Metal & Sand Supply, Coal & Minerals Movement, Road Construction, and for shallow and deep mining (coal mine, tunnelling, quarry, coal pit, earth work, and OB removal; surface mining (sand carriage, iron ore shallow mines to storage area, building construction materials, stone crusher sites, coal carrier from shallow mines to storage area). The Transit Mixer is used at construction sites, captive sites of canals, dams, bridges, and road construction. Tip Trailers enable coal and ore movement; and the Bulkers are for bulk cement and fly ash.

These multiple applications are not possible without R&D. The tipper designs are modular in nature and provide flexibility to serve each of the applications. We are present in the tipper range from 6.2-ton to 37-ton GVW. Each tonnage point has a different need and is designed accordingly.

Telematics has changed the way logistics businesses operate

Telematics offers advanced features to monitor the fleet and ensures ease, safety, and simplicity of operations. Launched in 2012, Tata’s FleetMan offers solutions to track and control vehicles anywhere in the country with real time monitoring, geo-fencing, trip review, alert reporting and trip management.

Another critical feature of the FleetMan is trip management where one can assign a specific trip to any vehicle within the fleet with start and end locations, specify the load carried, and the estimated time of arrival at the destination. The FleetMan system tracks the specified vehicle and provides alerts as per the parameters set. This helps in increasing cost efficiency and better fleet utilization through trip assignments and tracking of one’s vehicle.

Today, close to 60,000 vehicles have been deployed with this system across India and abroad. Tata Motors is the first OEM in India to launch this as a standard fitment in its entire range of Prima vehicles, along with three years of complimentary service

We plan to open more dealerships in 6-12 months

We plan to open more dealerships for our commercial vehicles in the next 6-12 months across the country, and are also looking at equipping more dealers to offer mobile workshop services. At present, the company has over 100 fully-loaded mobile workshops.

We conduct driver training programs at our five training centers in Ajmer, Silchar, Pune, Dimapur, and Mauhana. In the last five years, over 1,02,000 drivers have been trained, and over the next five years, IDTR plans to train more than 1,39,000 drivers.

We are present in over 60 markets

Tata Motors ventured into the international market through a partnership with DIMO in 1961 for CVs, and today, we are present in over 60 markets. We will enhance our presence in emerging markets, with a special focus on ASEAN, Asia, Africa, Middle East, and Latin America, through world-class products like the Xenon, Super Ace, Prima and Ultra range of trucks.

The CV segment has bounced back strongly

Starting July 2017, the CV segment has bounced back strongly and has witnessed M-o-M growth. Tata Motors registered a strong topline growth across segments in Q2 with a 28% growth in MHCV, and an overall growth of 13.8% as compared to Q2FY17.

In October and November 2017, the M&HCV segment for Tata Motors grew by 8 percent and 88%, respectively, over 2016, due to increasing customer acceptance of the Tata Range of BS4 vehicles with superior SCR Technology, infrastructure development led by government funding, and a move towards higher tonnage vehicles, leading to an increased demand for our newly launched 49T tractors and the 37T multi-axle trucks, supported by a sustained increase in production.

GST has enabled customers to bring down cost/ton km by increasing number of trips

The impact of demonetization was huge for the entire CE industry including Tata Motors. The effect started easing out in the early part of Q4, and we saw some clear signs of recovery bringing in positivity during the fourth quarter of FY 17.

The domestic CV industry ended Q1 FY 2018 with a contraction of 9 percent in unit sales, primarily led by sharp decline in sales of M&HCVs - Trucks and Buses (due to Q4 FY17 ahead of the BS IV roll-out), deferment by fleet operators before GST, and supply disruptions owing to limited availability of components for BS-IV vehicles.

Starting July, we welcomed the initiative by the Union Government for introducing GST, thereby bringing in one uniform tax across the country. Following the roll out of GST, we decided to pass on the entire benefit to our customers in the ex-showroom prices. GST has brought with it good efficiencies for logistics sector, thus enabling customers to bring down their cost/ ton kilometer by increasing the number of trips.
