Rope Suspended Platform/Gondola- Best solution for external works at heights

Santosh Chaurasia

Rope Suspended Platform(RSP)/Gondola - easy-to-use, efficient and takes into account the most advanced safety parameters

Rope Suspended Platform (RSP), commonly known as Gondola (or cradle or working platform) is being widely used in India for working at heights for jobs such as external wall plastering, installing glass facades, painting, etc. Earlier, the RSP market was limited to big facade contractors, but in the last 3 years; all the big paint manufacturing companies and applicators have also become interested in RSPs.

New Age
The market has expanded greatly and now more than 3500 machines of New Age Construction Equipment are being used across the country and are working in almost all big and high-rise projects. The company has played a vital role in changing the perception of the Indian market by replacing the unsafe, traditional mechanisms. Earlier, suspended platforms meant a 7.5-metre straight structure design, however, New Age Construction developed different designs of RSP at its factory in Rajkot, Gujarat. It introduced custom-shaped suspended platforms with special specifications, tailored to meet the requirements in the construction of irregular buildings. The Customised Platforms introduced were the L-type (90 degree), C-Shape, Curve-Shape, W-Shape, Square-Shape, Round-Shape, Multiple Front Extension Platforms, besides multiple modifications in suspension mechanism/ parapet clamping/ wall brackets were introduced for the first time in India by the company.

Customized RSP revolutionized the external painting mechanism and replaced the bamboo and metal scaffoldings. Besides being safe, it helps save a big amount of the overall project cost. Given below are its features and advantages over Bamboo / H-frames

Comparison Chart for RSP & Bamboo / H-frames

SAFETY Lots of safety features are added to work at heights Depends on lifeline only
CONVIENENT Easy to install, dismantle, move from one site or city to other Lengthy procedure
INSTALLATION & LABOUR 1-2 days only for installation. Only 2-3 workers required. Full training provided so less dependency on others 10-20 days minimum. Dependency on manpower
SHIFTING Only 2 hrs required for nearby shifting, or one day for another building. Time consuming procedure
WORKING HEIGHT Easily workable up to/above 200m height with advanced safety features Working height limitations
PRODUCTIVITY Workers are confident to work because of a long size working platform with safety railings Fear of working at heights because of lack of safety devices
ASSETS RSPs are like assets. Can be used for long time. Have a good return value also Its consumable item. Limited time frame for use. Very less or no return value
LIFE OF MATERIAL Long life of machines. Major parts are of MS Steel / Galvanised. Branded electrical parts for panel. No life of bamboos after one project. Chances of getting destroyed in rainy season
REPAIR Easy to repair. Low maintenance cost. Need to change
STORAGE OF MATERIAL Very less space required for storage. Machines can be dismantled in small parts easily A big space required for storage
ENTRY FOR BIG PROJECTS Mandatory to work on gondolas for high-rise prestigious projects. Focused on safety first. Bamboo scaffolding not allowed due to lack of safety parameters.
