Volvo Penta's Stage V Tech Engine & Battery Energy Storage Subsystem
Informed R. Sethumadhavan, Head of Volvo Penta India & Industrial Business Unit, “The Volvo Penta Stage V technology engine is being offered in European market from 2019. The experience in demanding applications such as mining, material handling and construction has taught Volvo Penta what matters most in the field. Our stage V solution provides impressive and reliable power, making life easier in every cog in the business chain.
The common rail injection system, fixed geometry turbo, and viscous fan form a robust solution that lowers fuel consumption. The common rail also reduces noise, leading to a more comfortable work environment. The regeneration strategy for our Stage V engines eliminates unplanned stops during operation. There is no need for regeneration under normal operational conditions; the exhaust temperature is automatically maintained at an optimum level. Our engine and exhaust aftertreatment systems are designed as one integral system, built especially for optimized performance under Stage V standards. It is a single supplier solution, from piston to exhaust.

High-power density and flexible configuration options offer efficient space utilization and ease of installation. The engine commonality makes it easier for OEMs who use multiple engine sizes in their applications. Our highly advanced exhaust aftertreatment system – based on SCR technology, uncooled EGR, and diesel particulate filter – allows for a low-complexity engine. The robust quality further contributes to maximum uptime.
The Stage V and China IV range ensures installation commonality between different emission levels, from Stage II to Stage V. Customers can integrate solutions from across emission stages, minimizing the need for re-engineering
Volvo Penta’s Stage V engines range from 105 to 585 kW/140 to 785 hp. World-class fuel efficiency and maximum power and torque at low rpm deliver smooth operations and optimized performance said Sethumadhavan.
Also on display was a 3D print model of battery energy storage systems (BESS) from Volvo Penta. Sethumadhavan continued “Battery energy storage systems (BESS) enhance power grid reliability, capacity, and resiliency through energy storage and delivery. Volvo Penta is developing a subsystem intended for BESS that’s scalable and purpose-built, aiming to improve efficiency and performance for power delivery headed towards a net-zero future.”
TAD880-884VE - 7.7 liter, in-line 6 cylinder - 160, 185, 210, 235 and 250 kW EU Stage V
The powerful TAD880-884VE is a reliable and fuel-efficient off-road Diesel Engine built on the Volvo in-line six concept.
Low cost of ownership: World class fuel efficiency combined with a reliable Exhaust Aftertreatment System (EATS) gives high uptime as well as low cost of ownership.
Compact & simple installation: System concepts lower the amount of cooling capacity needed hence minimizing radiator size. Interfaces are compatible with engines of earlier legislations. Installation guidelines as well as drawings and CAD models are easy to access. Material needed to install the engine can be ordered as optional equipment from Volvo Penta. The result is an engine and EATS that is easy to install and operate.
Durability & low noise: Long experience with DPF/SCR systems in combination with great knowledge of base engine development reduces risk of downtime. The in-line six cylinder engine together with common rail system produces smooth operation with low noise.
Power & torque: Maximum torque is reached at low rpm and continues to the rated power. The power and torque layout enables the engine to operate in a wide engine speed range.
Low exhaust emission: The engine design combined with optimized DPF/SCR technology ensures that TAD880-884VE complies with EU Stage V emissions.
Easy service & maintenance: Easily accessible service and maintenance points contribute to ease of service of the engine. Remotely mounted filters and service points can be chosen as options.
From just one to as many units as required, Volvo Penta’s solution is scalable up to hundreds of megawatts and optimized to meet BESS business needs. Volvo Penta will be supporting battery energy storage manufacturers with a compact, efficient, high-power density integrated solution that’s easy to install, control and maintain. It can be utilised in variety of applications like data centers, power stations, factories and other decentralised microgrids. Our solution is taking steps towards becoming a great fit for these applications.
