Utilisation of Waste Materials in Road Construction
The Road sector has been receiving a lot of attention by the central as well as state governments during the last two decades. As a result, new roads are being constructed and existing ones are being upgraded to meet the traffic demand. New projects like Bharat Mala, connectivity of major ports, special road development program for North East region, road development projects in left wing extremism affected areas, and many more such projects announced by the Government of India will enhance the road construction activities in the country in coming the years apart from the National Highway Development Program (NHDP), Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and Mukhaya Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (MMGSY) schemes.

A huge quantity of naturally available materials like soil and aggregate are being used for road construction, which has created severe scarcity of the conventional materials. On the other hand, different types of waste materials are being generated by different industries in the country viz. copper slag, zinc slag, steel slag, jarofix, jarosite, phosphogypsum, red mud, Kimberlite, lime sludge, marble slurry, cinder etc. The total annual production of different waste materials is copper slag (1 MT), zinc slag (0.5 MT), steel slag (10 MT), coal ash (120 MT), red mud (4 MT), phosphogypsum (6 MT), jarosite (1 MT), Kimberlite (1 MT) and lime sludge (5 MT). Presently, these waste materials are being dumped near the respective producing plants without any usages or with very minimal application. These materials have the potential for application in road construction. Application of these wastes will either help to conserve the conventional materials or will reduce the greenhouse gas emissions during construction. This article describes briefly about some of the waste material’s utilisation in the road construction viz. municipal solid waste, jarofix, chrome slag, steel slag, copper slag, zinc slag, phosphogypsum and red mud.
