Welcome to the Excon 2015 Show Preview
S. A. Faridi
Defying odds; Excon 2015 is going to be a spectacular trade fair with over 850 exhibitors showcasing their innovative high-end products and services to more than 35,000 trade visitors over a sprawling exhibition area stretching across 2,20,000 sqm at BIEC Exhibition Centre in Bangaluru. No doubt, it will be the busiest week of the year for attendees.
“It is going to be one of the biggest business opportunities for the CE sector,” the steering committee Chairman, Excon-2015, Mr. Vipin Sondhi said, aptly adding, “There is a tremendous scope of business in India and Excon has been a key enabler to bring world-class technology in the country. The show offers exhibitors an extraordinary opportunity to connect with the end users, understand their business needs, and develop world-class machinery.”
While interacting with exhibitors for the show preview, we learnt that they were quite busy in introducing advanced products, incorporating world-class technologies in their equipment. It clearly shows that the mindset of both Indian equipment makers and users is changing fast from price-sensitivity to product attributes viz. productivity, reliability, and total cost of ownership.
It is quite heartening to learn that the earthmoving equipment manufacturers are making their products more fuel-efficient and versatile for performing multiple jobs, which contractors can utilize at various jobsites like excavation, loading, breaking, handling of stone/granite with special attachments, and so on.
Another trend which is catching up fast in India and would be quite visible at Excon is that concrete batching plants are becoming more automated, compact, and mobile to ensure more productivity and quality, besides addressing space scarcity at job sites. Moreover, it will help to shift the equipment easily and safely after the project completion with minimum labor and logistics.
Likewise, in the crushing and screening equipment sector, we find that mobile plants demand is growing and in view of this, the manufacturers are focusing on the compactness and mobility. Another interesting development in the sector is that after many years of lull, tracked plants are again witnessing a bit upward trends. Apart from these, the vital development that we noticed is the growing demand for sand manufacturing and washing plants, which is prompting crusher manufacturers to offer products and solutions to manufacture/wash sand.
Cranes and material handling is another interesting exhibition area at Excon where safety, efficiency, and ease in operations are the key talking points besides ability to work on multiple applications.
The exhibition is not just for equipment and machineries but is also a big platform for component manufacturers to showcase their products and technologies.
Excon has always been the launching pad for new equipment, products, and services. No doubt, this year too, we will see many new launches. Most of them are mentioned in this issue but there are many more on the anvil. I'm very much looking forward to see, what’s new in the next.
We welcome all at NBM&CW’s stand at Hall No.1 Stall No 4. It would be my profound pleasure to have a cup of coffee with you.
Manitowoc to Showcase Best-in-class Cranes
Mr. Raman Joshi, Managing Director, Manitowoc Cranes India
In response to the growing Asian crane market, Manitowoc will showcase its Potain MCT85 topless tower crane and Grove GMK6300L all-terrain crane. The MCT85 is gaining a reputation in the region for accelerating construction schedules and working well on job sites with tight space limitations. The GMK6300L is one of the world's best-selling cranes, due to its best-in-class boom length and capacity.
Raman Joshi, managing director of Manitowoc Cranes India, said that the features of these two cranes are ideal for job sites in the region as they have been proven to improve return on investment for their owners.
"The Potain MCT85 and the Grove GMK6300L cranes are designed and constructed to deliver maximum production and performance with minimum running cost," he said. "As we see them deployed across India and the rest of Asia, we expect them to increase efficiency and help companies win more jobs."
Also on the stand, Manitowoc will provide visitors with a host of information on the many services it offers to customers, including Manitowoc Crane Care, Manitowoc Finance and Lift Solutions. Manitowoc representatives will also be at the booth to answer customer questions and help companies determine the crane models that best suit their individual applications.
Manitowoc introduced the Potain MCT85 to the Indian market at the end of 2014, unveiling the crane to customers at the bC India trade fair. Several companies have already purchased the crane and report that its additional reach, greater flexibility and stronger hoisting ability are delivering more efficient operations on the job sites on which they work.
The MCT85 is the successor to the MCi85, one of Potain's most popular cranes of recent times. The new model has a higher free-standing height, increased working speed, simplified assembly, broad load curves and lower power consumption. It has a maximum jib length of 52m and a tip load of 1.1t, offering better operational versatility.
The 300t capacity Grove GMK6300L all-terrain crane is one of Manitowoc's biggest success stories. It features a class-leading 80 m main boom and independent all-wheel steering. The cab is considered to be the most comfortable and advanced in the industry.
Besides offering exceptional reach, the crane is also relatively compact and offers excellent on-site flexibility with a choice of five available outrigger positions, more than any other crane in this capacity class. It also features Grove's unique MEGATRAK independent suspension, as well as all-wheel steer for easier navigation of job sites.
"We picked these cranes from the entire Manitowoc lineup to showcase at Excon because their features are ideal for the Indian market," Joshi said. "We are excited to talk with customers face-to-face at the event and help them come up with solutions that will improve their business and increase their ROI."

Mr. Tim Andrews, Managing Director, Arrow Machinery
Stronger: The use of wet mix (40mm+ slump) vibrated concrete produce a much stronger (in excess of 30mpa using a grade 25mix), and more durable finished Kerb. At 40mm slump optimum cement/water ratio is achieved assisting the hydration process. The compaction achieved by the vibrators increase the density of the concrete in turn increasing the strength and integrity of the Kerb.
Faster: Up to 15 lineal meters per minute can be achieved straight out of the machine taking only 12 minutes to discharge a truckload and achieving just under 500mts of finished Kerb per day with a 2 man crew.
Economical: Jobs can be completed ahead of time as the backfilling and associated earthworks can be done the very next day. Slurry materials and manpower are not required as the finished Kerb comes straight out of the machine.
ARROW MACHINERY, Australia's only commercial manufacturer of Slipform Kerb machines produces 2 models- the ARROW 350 MINI SLIPFORM KERBER and the ARROW 750XL SLIPFORMER.

Trimble Connected Site Solutions for Heavy Civil Roading and Site Prep Contractors
At EXCON 2015, Trimble will demonstrate how Connected Site solutions transform the workflows of grading and excavating contractors, paving contractors, drilling and piling contractors, and site and utility contractors. Trimble Connected Site solutions include:
- The Connected Worker– wirelessly sync data in the field with the office and receive GNSS corrections via the Internet. A grade checker, construction surveyor, supervisor and other field personnel can receive the 3D constructible design model, create new measurements and then send the measurement and stakeout results back to the office for review. Design changes originating in the office can also be sent to field crews so they are rapidly updated with current information. All of this is accomplished without personnel ever leaving the site or their desk, dramatically increasing productivity and reducing costs.
- The Connected Machine - now standard in all Trimble Grade Control Systems, the Trimble Connected Machine helps contractors manage their assets and see what machines are doing. Machines can collect as-built measurement data for office delivery, and receive GNSS corrections using the Internet. A 3D constructible model created in the office can be sent to the machine operator for faster, more precise grading and earthmoving. Additionally, the machine can be used for volume measurements, so expensive measurements by grade checkers occur less frequently. Drive time and rework are also minimized, as both the office and machines in the field are kept up-to-date with the latest information.
- The Connected Project- The Trimble Connected Project allows contractors to create 3D construction models, perform data preparation and takeoff, wirelessly sync data, monitor site productivity, and manage fleets and assets. The 3D constructible design model created in the office can be sent to machines and controllers in the field, increasing efficiency, reducing rework and saving money. Additionally, a complete view of site productivity including materials quantity and movement, volume and compaction data, and fleet and asset management information can be shared across the organization to enable rapid decision-making and better communication.

Mr. B R Gururaj, Head-Business Development, Maxmech Equipments Pvt. Ltd.
According to Mr. B. R. Gururaj, Head-Business Development, Maxmech Equipments Pvt Ltd, "Our strong base is product knowhow, proven technology, and engineering skills which contribute to deliver world-class equipment that are technically superior and cost wise most economical."
Maxmech is actively involved in manufacturing of Concrete Batching Plant, Mobile concrete batching plant, transit mixers, Wet mix macadam plant, and Concrete line paver. "Our equipment are designed as per International Standards and by using highly recognized technologies to support building activities from its core. Our equipment are absolutely construction-friendly and stay best in creating cost-effective, reliable and time saving solutions for smooth and fast construction process."
While talking about the Unique Selling Propositions (USPs) at Maxmech that set it stand apart, Mr. Gururaj says, "The demand-supply scenario is always dynamic; customers buy our product because we are able to offer the right product or solution for a particular application and that is our USP. We believe in good engineered product backed by an efficient after sales service support. Buyers in the market place are being seen as far less sensitive to the price factor as was the case in the past. They are gradually becoming more value conscious, demanding better technical attributes, and assured comprehensive back-up technical support for the products and services acquired."
When asked about the influencing factor while buying new products he says, "We believe that it is the value for money concept that a typical Indian customer is concerned with whenever he goes for equipment purchase especially in such a difficult economic environment. He definitely prefers paying more, once he is confident on quality and reliability of equipment he has chosen. Customer understands that while procuring equipment, he is also subscribing to the after sales support that the manufacturer provides and that's where brand comes into the picture."
"We, at Maxmech are always proud of two things, delivering innovative products & providing technical solutions to our discerning customers. Our technical service engineers and spare parts are made available in the quickest possible time; ensuring minimum break down time. Since last 25 years, Maxmech has stood for commitment to quality, which reflects in our core value. We have invested in our design team which stands out as the backbone of our company. With our in-house design & development strength, focus is consistently on customer-oriented innovation & quality management. Our other unique feature is 'after-sales-service'. Customers can call 24x7 for any related query. The other factors such as brand, operators comfort, safety & visibility also plays an important role in influencing the purchase decision. With these abilities, we are able to satisfy our customers demand as per the requirement," he adds.
Giving an overview of the demand scenario, Mr. Gururaj said that Industry growth is expected to remain strong as a result of the government's commitment to make infrastructural developement. The government has taken innumerable initiatives to lift the sector from its current dormant conditions.
As far as road construction equipment market is concerned, it has witnessed rapid growth in recent years, mainly owing to accelerated road development programmes undertaken by the central and state governments. To meet this target, superior project execution capabilities will be needed, which will result in greater demand for road construction equipment. The simple truth is that there is a massive amount of work to be done in road sector, and this will call for large volumes of equipment to complete it. Almost all types of road equipment will witness growth.
"The new equipment purchases have slumped due to a lack of funds since buying involves large upfront payments. With the government stepping up its support to the infrastructure sectors along with adequate monetary measures aimed at increasing credit flow, the situation is likely to stabilize in the equipment sector," he emphasises. Demand of batching plant is increasing due to massive construction activity going on in the country. Every company wants to be self reliant and with very little dependency on others. The real challenge before manufacturers today lies in establishing new technology quickly; apart from bringing it in to the market. "The demand drivers for batching plants will definitely be the investment proposed in infrastructure, along with urban development and the housing sector. We expect that the potential demand for concrete equipment in India over the next few years will be quite substantial," he avers.

Patel Shot BlastingPatel Furnace & Forging, a leading manufacturer, distributor, and exporter of Shot Blasting machinery, sand blasting machines, shot peening equipment is participating at Excon 2015 to display its range of products there.
Airless Shot Blasting Machine | Surface Preparation Equipment | Blast Room Plant
Plate Shot Blasting Machine
Shot blasting process has become an integral part of steel structure and metal building industry. Shot Blasting provides 2 vital benefits for steel protection. Firstly, it removes all rust, mill scale, and corrosion, thus eliminating moisture which is almost always entrapped beneath these corrosion products. Secondly it provides ideal surface finish (SSPC – 10 | SA 2.5) for securing a continuous and effective bond between the steel surface and coat.
Advantage of Shot Blasting
- Removing Corrosion: Shot blasting can remove all forms of rust and corrosive materials from the metal surface, while leaving the base of the product unaffected. Typical corrosive builds include as mention below:
- Mill Scale
- Chemical Stains
- Chipped or faded paint
- Heat Treatment Scale
- Surface Preparation: Shot blasting is the most efficient and the most effective process to prepare a metal surface prior to painting or coating.
- High blast pattern accuracy.
- Much better bond between blasted surface & the protective coating.
- Aids in revealing any surface defects/errors.
- Increases the lifespan and the endurance of future coatings.
- The Environment: Shot blasting is one of only a few environment-friendly options for corrosion removal and surface preparation:
- The process only uses abrasion to clean the metal surface
- No chemicals used at all
- No acids
- Only cleanup is physical pellets
- Blasted steel and dust are swept away by powerful vacuum and dust collection system
- The process inherently recycles materials
Structure Shot Blasting Machine
Wheel Blasting (Air Less Shot Blasting)
In Wheel blasting, the abrasive media is propelled on work piece to be blast clean, using directly converting electric motor energy into kinetic energy by rotating a turbine wheel. It is categorized as an airless blasting operation because there is no use of air, liquid or gas to propel the abrasive media. A wheel machine is a high-power, high-efficiency blasting operation with recyclable abrasive (typically steel or stainless steel shot, cut wire, grit, or similarly sized pellets).
Air Blasting (Pneumatic Shot Blasting / Air Operated Shot Blasting)
In Air blast machines, the abrasive media is propelled with the help of compressed air pressure. A blast room is a complete air blast system which includes four main systems. The blasting chamber, the abrasive blasting pot or hopper and the dust collector and abrasive recycling system. The recycling systems ranging from manual sweeping and shoveling the abrasive back into the blast pot to full reclaim floors that convey the abrasive pneumatically or mechanically to a device that cleans the abrasive prior to recycling.
Paver Block Shot Blasting Machine
Expensive coloured face mix materials can be exposed in the shot-blasting process. This process provides a 'roughened' surface which then has very good non-slip properties. With blocks it's normally only the top surface that is made rough using shot blasting, as the sides and base are not visible when laid, but with kerbs, the top and roadside face would be shot blasted and made rough.

Customized, integrated use of TeklaAt Loe, Tekla is not just for design and detailing: the company has integrated Tekla Structures with their Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) which plan production and construction site shipments and logistics and control storage. Thanks to this integration, Loe has speeded up manufacturing and prevented mistakes.
Tekla software allows integration of systems like precast production planning, resource planning, machine automation systems and company-specific solutions. Loe wanted to customize Tekla software although it is ready to use when installed. The company developed an in-house application in order to generate production drawings that exactly match their needs from automatically Tekla model. Tekla Open API™ (Application Programming Interface) enables users to create third party applications that integrate and communicate within the same modeling environment.
Wealth of information
Saving time, money and material Building Information Modeling with Tekla can save time, money and material and other resources, as Loe knows from experience. The company has benefited from a significantly lower amount of errors in design and detailing as project parties have used less time to correcting errors and reproducing elements in later phases of construction. Thanks to BIM, the company finds possible errors already with the model which saves plenty of time and money compared to recognizing errors in production phase.
How Loe works: Case Papirbredden 2
As Loe chooses Tekla for 80% of their projects and 100% of big projects, Tekla was a natural choice for the complex Papirbredden 2. The project started in 2010, the building was opened in August 2012, and selected as the Building of the Year 2012 in Norway. The eight-story building has a two-story garage basement and is situated in an old industry area which is under revitalization.
Papirbredden 2 is built according to passive house principles. The building uses minimal energy in Drammen where the average temperature of December and January is about -2C (28F).
Depending on stage of design and construction, two to three Loe employees worked on detailing and drawing Papirbredden2. Loe delivered precast concrete walls, columns, decks, hollow decks and beams, and also a small amount of steel beams and columns. Outer walls of basement were made of cast-in-place concrete.
Material calculations for environmental evaluation
For precast concrete fabricators, material calculations made with Tekla are often useful for writing bids, but for Papirbredden2, Loe utilized material and other information to prove the environmental impact of their products.
For Papirbredden 2, the client wanted Loe to deliver national environmental EPD certificates of their produce. The certificate includes specification of materials, energy use, and environmental footprint during the whole lifecycle. Tonnage and volume information from the Tekla model helped with the environmental calculations.
Collaboration and several software solutions
"One of the most positive and enthusiastic users was the architect. He imported the IFC files to Revit Architecture, which put him in full control of columns and beams," tells Jan Børge Loe.
A characteristic feature of Papirbredden 2 was its complex geometry. Loe faced the challenge in the design phase when they decided to solve the issue with Tekla software, which is capable of handling complexity well.
"BIM helped during construction, when several temporary steel struts supported CIP concrete walls in the basement," says Jan Børge Loe. The team modeled all these structures made of different materials in Tekla to prevent conflicts.
As some of the temporary struts passed through precast concrete walls, they naturally had to take this into account in design and production. However, Loe experienced even greater benefit of Tekla when they modeled the complex geometry of the sloped walls, tilted in two directions. Thanks to BIM, the company finds possible errors already with the model which saves plenty of time and money compared to recognizing errors in production phase.
