As the curtain was unveiled on Excon 2011 on its last day signs of accomplishment were writ large on the faces of all signalling the successful culmination of this mega event. "We never had Excon so good on all fronts particularly on CE business front was the general impression. It is reported that all the exhibitors had transacted good business at the event with number of enquiries floating and most of them getting matured.
The conclusion of Excon 2011 was indeed a great moment for the CE industry, whereas the pre-Excon period was the moments of anxiety and concern in certain quarters and hopes in most quarters due to uncertainties and volatilities of ongoing economic scenario gripping the industry. As the official publication when NBM&CW started preparing pre-review activities of Excon 2011, there were mixed feelings. But the situation started improving gradually as the event was closure to its start and it reflects in our interactions with nearly 150 participating companies according to report published in NBM&CW November 2011 issue. The negative sentiments were slowly changing to positive mode. Most companies felt that the present spell of slowdown was a short-term phase and in long-term, the prospects would remain good and could be better in near future. The inaugural message of the minister indeed lifted the spirit of the industry and it was confident that its growth story is going to be intact. How much more ingenuity the industry puts would matter in taking it to its next level of performance.
Excon is the only International show in India which focuses on construction equipment & machinery and spare parts and this five-day trade fair has witnessed the launch of over 500 new products this year. The most significant factor of this show was that the visitors came from all over India, Nepal, Sri Lanka etc and all the exhibiting companies have received good enquiries for their products. The specific focus of the exhibition was on efficiency, productivity, environment, and safety.
Talking about Excon, Mr. Vipin Sondhi, Chairman, Excon 2011 said that the event has assumed international character, attracting large number of overseas companies. Overwhelmed by the response the event has generated, Mr Anand Sunderesan, Managing Director, Schwing Stetter India described it as an excellent platform for the existing and new players to showcase CE industry's new products and services to the customers.
According to Mr. Vijay Sharma, Executive Director, Terex Equipment Pvt Ltd, we, being just 6 years in Indian market, expected a good deal of interest among the manufacturers as well as customers for this year's edition, and surely, Excon came to our expectations. In nutshell, we are quite satisfied with the kind of response we got from this prestigious platform.
For Wirtgen, the event was a great success from the day one and made significant move forward in carrying the message of productivity, efficiency, safety, and environmental awareness aspects of the industry. It would definitely pep up the sagging CE market being witnessed today in this part, but in a passing phase, said Stefan Wirtgen, President Wirtgen Group of Germany.
All in all Excon 2011 has emerged as an excellent platform for global players in construction equipment industry to tap the huge business opportunity in India's infrastructure sector.
Delivering his inaugural address as the Chief Guest of the event, the Union Minister underlined that the government has drawn up an ambitious plan to build state-of-the- art infrastructure across the country with main focus on the construction of world class highways ensuring inclusive growth, which is a part of its long-term strategy to accelerate the pace of the GDP growth.
Talking about the investments being made in the infrastructure sector, the minister said that the investment made in 2011 accounted for 7.9 percent of the GDP. The figure is likely to increase to 10.7 by 2017. During the 12th Five Year Plan, the infrastructure investment would be to the tune of US$ 1 trillion. To fund the infrastructure projects, the Minister advised that alternative sources of financing be also explored. The minister announced that the Government's Infrastructure Investment Fund is coming out with a public issue to raise about Rs.10,000 crore. Stressing on mechanization for speedy project implementation, he said mechanization is imperative to speed up the implementation of India's infrastructure projects to achieve a sustained economic growth in the next ten years.
Delivering his special address at the inaugural session, B Muthuraman, President CII said that India should have a solid manufacturing base, and quality infrastructure to achieve double digit growth. To achieve these, he added, the country needs quality construction equipment. He urged the industry to go for high technology absorption, and enhance its design and engineering capability. The industry should try to market itself in a better way so as to attract the best talent, he advised.
In his theme address, Vipin Sondhi, Chairman, Excon 2011, said that roads are critical to promote inclusive economic growth in India, and for this reason, infrastructure should continue to remain a dominating theme of the country's growth story.
Quoting the CII-IECIAL Report on The Indian Earthmoving and Construction Equipment Industry Vision 2020: Commanding New Heights, which was released by the Union Minister at the event, Mr Sondhi said that the Indian construction equipment industry is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of about 21% to reach the size of $23 billion by 2020 from the current level of about $3.3 billion. By 2020, the industry is expected to create at least two million skilled jobs in maintenance and operation alone - that is, excluding the jobs in manufacturing of equipment.
Mr Glenville da Silva, Chairman, IECIAL in his address said that the government should articulate its environment policy to exploit the potential of the mining and power sector; come up with a new Land Acquisition policy that would speed up road infrastructure, and do away with multiple differential taxation systems across State boundaries to support the construction equipment and infrastructure industry.
Tracing the genesis and progress of Excon he said that in 2000, when the first edition of Excon was organized, the total number of construction equipment in India was just around 8,000 units. Thanks to the government's ambitious infrastructure projects, the equipment industry grew by seven times over the last ten years. Currently, there are about 60,000 units of construction equipments and India's CE industry today account for over 6% of the global market. Quoting the CII Report, he said that during the next decade, India's construction equipment industry is expected to grow six times from the current level, and would have over 3,30,000 units.
In his Welcome Address, Mr T T Ashok, Chairman, CII Southern Region said that the government should focus on addressing the issues of the industry in land acquisition, rehabilitation, tolls, among others. He remarked that in the last ten years, the construction industry is driving the economic growth of the country. The government used to be the prime players in the past but today private players drive the growth. The portion of infrastructure investment to GDP has doubled in the last ten years, he said.
Mr Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII, in his concluding remarks, said that the increased size of Excon reflects the upbeat mood in the Indian construction equipment industry which is poised to grow manifold with the entry and expansion of global OEMs.
For CE Industry, five days of Excon were adrenaline packed dedicated to showcasing of a vast spectrum of products and services from pins to heavy machineries, unveiling of new products and services, new customization and after market initiatives and above all demonstration of rare marketing bonhomie and marketing blitz. Myraid mood of CE companies participating in this event are reflected in our editorial staff interaction report published hereafter.

JCB India

JCB India Limited is adding new dimensions to its equipment offering. The increasing stiff competition in construction equipment sector, makes the company, expand its products portfolio. Emerging requirements from construction sector is an added reason behind the new initiative.
Extended product offerings include: new 3 DX super backhoe loader, 3DX-XTRA backhoe loader, and 4DX backhoe loader. The company chose Excon 2011 to display the new products. Stronger in its class, the new backhoe loaders comes with JCB ecoMAX turbo charged water cooled engines with increased cooler size for better performance in hot and dusty conditions. According to the company, the machine has 6-in-1 front shovel with high break out force for better loader productivity. Better visibility, improved front reach, lower turning radius and high tractive and breakout forces give 'best in class' loader performance, says the company. 4DX also comes with similar engine as that of 3DX super backhoe loader. The machine has 1.2 cum loader bucket and a 17 ft excavator, enhanced tear out forces and bigger bucket size to enhanced productivity. While the 3DX-XTRA backhoe loader has 0.30 cum bigger size bucket for better excavation economics. Extra working speed of 123 km hydraulic pump for material handling per hour is the added features according to JCB.

However, on growing demand from infrastructure sector and competition he stated that good numbers of new entrants have been making recent product launches to take a slice of the backhoe loaders market. Taking indication of the new development, JCB's decision to give a new dimension to its main product offering by adding new features to suit multi-various job requirements seems to be timely. JCB has also launched small capacity 2DX backhoe loader. The machine is powered by Kirloskar 49 hp, kirloskar 4R810 engine and comes with a shovel capacity of 0.60 cum and bucket capacity of 0.18 cum. Mr.Sondhi informs, " The 2DX is a highly fuel efficient backhoe loader that will lower the entry point of mechanisation in the country."
Increasing competition in mainstay business is making JCB diversify into other product offerings. On the higher part of the value chain, the company displayed its new 430 ZX wheel loaders during Excon 2011. Available with two engine variants comprising JCB Common Rail BS-III complaint 130 hp and Ashok Leyland BS-III complaint 130 hp engine. 430 ZX wheel loader has bucket options of 1.5 rock bucket, 1.7 general purpose, 1.9 general purpose and 2.5 cum bucket for coal. " The loaders will be marketed in coal and iron ore loading. The construction aggregate market is also an area where we will promote the equipment with its bucket options. One of the prime USPs of the company is the higher reach of the buckets for tipper and wagon loading." Also on the higher part of earthmoving value chain, JCB displayed its JS 210 Heavy Duty, 21 ton tracked excavator. Fitted with Isuzu tier-2 engine, the machine comes with bucket options of 0.9 cum and 1.02 cum.
Talking on emerging requirements, Mr. Sondhi says, "Based on heterogeneous nature of Indian construction market, we are now in the process of expanding our products portfolio in other segments and
JCB has recently launched the new 15 ton Liftall pick-n-carry crane. Available in two models Liftall 1553 and 1554, the cranes come with 3 section and 4 section telescopic boom. For fulfilling the emerging requirements from road construction sector we launched VM 115 soil compactor and VMT 860 tandem roller which are both powered by JCB engines. Our skid steer loaders and tele handlers are also in demand these days and finding its use in nursery, irrigation applications, palletisation functions in brick yards and also for other material handling at construction sites."

The introduction of new range of equipment is expected to drive the top and bottom lines of the company. Mr .Sondhi says, "given the strong demand fundamentals from the construction sector demand potential exists for our new equipment and we expect to increase the sales of the equipment importantly our backhoe loaders by providing various attachments to the equipment for undertaking various applications. New range of equipment equipped with rugged features making them attuned to Indian job site requirements will also drive sales."
Market Retention
Extending product offerings is a new business initiative that is well likely to provide dividends to the company in the long run, provided it is able to market the products effectively to appropriate demand pockets. However, the expansion can get circumscribed owing to the stiff competition in the sector. This will call for a strong product positioning by the company. Mr. Sondhi says, "being a premium product manufacturer, we always ensure that our equipment are cost competitive to operate. Launch of high fuel-efficient JCB, Ecomax engines, which are being fitted in our backhoe loaders is a new step towards the direction."He mentioned, "our products continue to be recognized as being highly reliable, productive and durable, characterized by faster cycle time, high digging force and less maintenance support. To ensure that our machines are reliable, we make them pass through 10 qualifying tests during production process, all of which help give our products a strong market positioning." He adds, "for better equipment uptime, we have got good understanding with Kirloskar and Cummins, our engine suppliers. Further, for better equipment integration, we have started making our own engines. Better filtration and fuel injection allows JCB engines to take on adulterated fuel minimizing equipment downtime."
However, market retention will be looked into by JCB through strengthening its customers support. Mr. Sondhi says, "with 54 dealers across the country and 400+service outlets, we are adequately positioned in terms of equipment availability and customer support. We intend to strengthen the position further by being closer to the customers." The multipronged approach of the company to expand its market presence seems to be a direction in a right way. However, with demand unfolding coming fiscal, the basis of the company's marketing strategy will stand to be justified.

Telcon
Telcon participated in the event to highlight its range of cranes available. Mentioning about the new developments Telcon officials said that it has upgraded its Tata Friction Crane ranges to meet current safety standards and end user expectations. The features like hydraulic controls, digital load moment indicators, heavy duty drums, tower light indicators have been made as a standard features among others to make crane. According to company sources, TATA Friction crane comes with a dual advantage of undertaking foundation jobs through grab and casing arrangement with its duty cycle features as well as erection and lifting jobs. These cranes are deployed in highly deteriorating conditions and no hydraulic crawler cranes of similar capacity match the value proposition offered by these cranes. Telcon will try to counter competition brought by new foreign products offerings in similar class through strong application based brand positioning coupled with competitive pricing, enhanced products support, and development activities.
Telcon informed that sales figure of its TFC are growing steadily due to its high level of reliability in both erction and duty cycle jobs, rugged construction, long life and its dependable tag. Apart from TFC 280-45, its 25 T class friction crane model TFC 75, is being accepted for the foundation jobs like sheet piling and clamshell attachment. Telcon expects to sell these units more aggressively to construction companies involved in foundation jobs and hiring segment.
Company sources said that due to steep appreciation of Japanese Yen and to consolidate its leadership position in erection segment, Telcon is evaluating indigenisation of certain ranges of Hitachi Sumitomo hydraulic crawler cranes at its facility in Jamshedpur with most of the components being sourced from local vendors which will make the cranes price competitive. Telcon is banking on its pan India sales and service network, ready availability of components and parts, parallel market support for its cranes to maintain its leadership. Officials mentioned that in order to enhance customer support, Telcon will provide parts support through its 300+ service touch points present across the country with renewed focus on cranes business.
Telcon informed us that crawler cranes demand will get moderated in next 1-2 year due to slowdown in demand in sectors like Power and Steel attributed to factors like policy related issues, coal supply, rising inflation and interest charges, crisis in Europe etc. First half of this financial year recorded volume of around 240 units of crawler cranes almost equal to last year sale, and the next half would see steep moderation in demand.
Telcon also displayed its range of excavators, wheel loaders and recently acquired Serviplem transit mixers at the show.

Rekers
The family-owned Rekers presented innovative technical solutions for the concrete block production industry, including its new Block machine RS1KV of Compact size with "different" concept that surprised the whole industry in Excon, said Mr. Norbert Foppe, Managing Director of Rekers GmbH. Putting in a nutshell, he said that nothing is superfluous in this machine. No part is moved unnecessarily and one can save energy costs and therefore also money in long run.
About the company's future plan in India he said that positive signals from the market give the company every right to expect that it will definitely be able to generate new orders in the near future. Being a 56 years old company and focused on solutions for concrete transportation, block machines and handling plants for small products and pipes; Rekers has its factory in Spelle, North Germany spreading over an area of 36,000 sq mtr. Now seeing the demand from the Indian market, they are planning to work on localization of machine manufacturing and very soon, Indian customers will be able to buy Innovative and technical advanced Rekers machines at much better prices locally. This will be their first overseas manufacturing facility other than headquater in Germany, which will change the future of concrete block market in this country.
Talking about the functionality of the products, Mr. Kamaldeep Sandhu-Sales Manager (India) said that the RS1KV universal block machine with pallet size of 1300x550, produces the most diverse concrete products with heights of 30–300mm and is the first of its kinds in the world, featuring very special innovations from Rekers. On this block machine, a broad range of different products can be manufactured – from classic paving blocks, hollow blocks for building, kerbstones for road construction, garden wall blocks, retaining wall for flyovers and multi- coloured big slabs & flagstones for high end market.
There are several innovations that make this block machine interesting for the international concrete block industry. The filling direction and the discharge direction are offset by 90f to each other. An outstanding solution, because this way, the lowest products, such as slabs can be manufactured in heights from as little as 30mm. In addition, it allows you, an optimum insight view of the production process. The quality of the concrete goods produced can be checked after the first discharge cycle.
The optimum filling of the mould with concrete is one of the greatest challenges in the production of concrete blocks. The fast feed boxes for the core and facing concrete are both provided with a very large mould over travel.
According to Mr. Sandhu, the newly developed multi-stage shaking grid of the core concrete feed box, in which force, velocity and stroke are optimally matched to the product, is a world's first and a very special innovation. This milestone in the concrete industry on the part of Rekers results in shorter, optimized filling process.
Elaborating further he stated, for the variation of the product height, both the core concrete unit and the facing concrete unit are adjusted through a common moving frame by means of the two mould lifting cylinders. The innovative principle of the quadruple pillar guide for the robust mould and tamper cross beam provides for the optimal guidance of the mould and the tamper, due to the large distances between the bearings in the lower and upper frame, thus creating optimal conditions for the high quality production of concrete products.

IDS Technologies India
IDS Technologies India Private Limited (formerly Industrial & Domestic Systems), construction automation solution provider participated in Excon 2011 and demonstrated its available customized automation solutions for production of concrete, asphalt, dry mortar, precast and aggregate under the new brand ‘IDS Batch solutions.' The new products of IDS Batch Solutions are configured for outdoor applications, contractor & builder applications, Infra projects, Local RMCs and corporate RMC requirements.
Mentioning about the utility of IDS Batch Solutions, Mr. Umesh Mukkannavar, MD, IDS technologies said, "the solution made on latest technologies can guarantee customers in getting higher productivity better quality output and individual batch accuracy through their batching plants. Based on the utility provided by the solution, it enjoys customer confidence across the country."
Mr. Umesh said, we also displayed our new range of ‘IDS Biz Solutions' which are affordable business process automation modules for theconstruction sector. These modules are combination of industry specific ERP + Process Automation. The business solution differentiates itself from existing ERP which are mainly data management tools. IDS Biz modules automate the production process and bring plant/production data to IT platform. Being helped by the automation process the contractor can well migrate from manual data entry. This is because, the software itself auto captures data during the process, there is neither data manipulation nor errors in data. Another advantage is that the software helps the decision maker to define business process and set organization hierarchy."
He added, "the biggest advantage of IDS biz solutions is that the software adapts to customers' existing processes and doesn't insist customers to follow a process defined by the software. The adaptability of software makes implementation easy and quickly acceptable to plant operators."
Mr. Umesh further said, "in many cases plants/sites are located at remote areas. Sites of some companies are spread across wide regions or across the country. In such cases establishing control over plant/site related activities, monitoring the events or timely data analyses are impossible to achieve. Wide operating expense of plants and sites continue to pose challenge for decision makers in improving efficiency of their sites and plants. IDS Biz solutions offer respite for entire customer spectrum with affordable solutions by connecting plants/sites to the decision makers." IDS demonstrated 12 automation modules during Excon 2011 for Concrete, Asphalt, Dry mortar Precast and Aggregate segments of the construction industry involved in production of raw materials.

Voltas Crane

Voltas participated in Excon 2011. Deputy General Manager-Cranes, Mr. Aniruddha Moharir mentioned about the cranes business and said that there has been slowdown in demand for cranes from infrastructure sector. However, we expect that with application area being wide for cranes demand is unlikely to get affected in the coming years.
Voltas manufactures rough terrain cranes of 20-30-40-45 tons and the company expects its business to grow in this segment. However, the steep appreciation of Japanese yen is a matter of concern for the company to sell Kobelco crawler cranes in a bigger way to the Indian construction sector. To minimize the impact of appreciating yen, Kobelco has already started indigenous manufacturing and will offer better warranty and service terms to customers. The annual maintenance contract and better parts support will be focussed. We expect localization initiated by Kobelco is likely to make the cost of its products competitive in the mid- and long-term.
