The Parallel Lower Ganga Canal Project is a part of the World Bank aided UPWSRP program, which is a major water sector reforms initiative for achieving the broad objectives of the State Water Policy, with the main intervention objectives being sectoral reforms in the state is water sector in general, and irrigation and drainage sub-sectors in particular.
It has been a matter of pride for KYB-Conmat, a part of the Japanese Business Conglomerate KYB Group, that its Concrete Paver Machines are an integral part of the project, which would help the Ganges water reach thousands of people and their farms.
KYB-Conmat manufactures concrete batching plants, concrete paving machines, concrete transit mixers, concrete pumps and rack-and-pinion elevators. For the prestigious Ganga Canal lining project, the contractor has selected KYB-Conmat Concrete Canal Paving Machines which are being used for 85% of the project. With high speed and accuracy of the Canal Paving machines, the project is going ahead of its estimated timeline.
The major challenge posed for KYB-Conmat in this project has been the heavy seepage from the adjacent canal. It was very tricky to manage the water build-up that happened as result of the seepage, creating a hindrance for the Canal Paving Machines to operate efficiently. To mitigate the problem, multiple water pumps had to be deployed for continuous dewatering of the site. It needed to be ensured that dewatering was not overdone, which would have caused damage on the structure. The company also provided longitudinal and transverse sleepers to enhance the stability of the canal cross section.
Extra heavy-duty canal pavers had been designed for the Parallel Lower Ganga, with a paving span of 26 m, with an aim to complete the entire bed section paving in two passes. Despite such a long paving span, the paving was completed with the desired surface finish and slab thickness, within the permissible tolerance limits.
These specially designed Concrete Canal Paving machines used for the Parallel Lower Ganga Canal Project employed mechanization of the highest level with the latest technology. The most advanced Geared oil-free motors were used in these Canal Pavers, to ensure a hassle-free operation with minimal maintenance. These pavers were built such that they were capable of delivering around 180-200 sq.m./hr output. They also had an in-built vibratory cylinder attachment which enhanced the quality of the pavement.
