Concor Nepal rail link

Container Corporation of India (Concor) is planning to convert – from meter gauge to broad gauge – over 108km of rail track between Katihar and Jobgbani with the aim of facilitating transportation of Nepal’s containerized imports through Kolkata Port. An official spokesperson of the Corporation said that currently it is limited to only one route –Kolkata Port – Raxaul (India) and Birganj Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Nepal. At Jogbani, containers can be offloaded from flat wagons and transported by road across the border to Biratnagar in Nepal, located less than a km distance from border, where there is a road linked container freight station. Cargo inducement is estimated at five to six rakes a month. Although the proposal was mooted by Concor about a year ago, Custom authorities in India are yet to clear it. Similar facility between Nautanwa near Gorakhapur and Bhairahawa in Nepal may also be considered in near future
